Frequently asked questions
Q. What power supply is required to drive the motor?
A. The motor is driven by a 12V DC power supply. Each KEF Ci 200QT draws 350mA of current, therefore, multiply this figure by the number of speakers connected in the system, and add 10% extra as head room. e.g. If using three speakers for L/C/R in a home theatre system a power supply rated at 12V DC and 1.2A would be ideal. (3 x 350mA = 1.05 A + 10% = 1.2A)
Q. Why is the power supply not supplied with the speakers?
A. The Ci 200QT is sold in over 50 different countries, which may have different and safety requirements. Also the amperage rating of the supply will vary, dependant on how many speakers are being used in the system (please note previous question).
Q. What is music sensing?
A. The music sensing circuit on the Ci 200QT allows the system to automatically power into the down position when music or a movie is played through a system. The speakers will remain in the down position until 4 minutes after the signal has stopped. Note that in music sensing mode, the speakers will not play in the up position. i.e. when they are flush mounted into the ceiling.
Q. What other methods can be used to bring the speakers into the downposition, and what are the benefits of doing this?
A. A jumper switch on the control board enables the installer to choose between manual and music sensing modes (see installation manual for full details). Once this switch is in the manual position, a number of alternative triggers can be used to control it:
- A relay from a control system such as Creston, AMX or Lexicon. The controller can be programmed to bring the Ci 200QT into the downposition as part of a macro, which would also dim room lighting, lower a motorised projector screen etc.
- A number of home theatre receivers have an AC outlet on their rear panels. If this outlet is connected to a 12V DC power supply which in turn is connected to the trigger wire of the Ci 200QT, then powering up the receiver would result in the Ci 200QT gliding into the downposition. The opposite would apply when the receiver was switched off, as there would no longer be any power driving the speakers trigger control.
- Any kind of manual switching (e.e.g..light switch) can be used to drive a 12V DC power supply to the Ci 200QTs trigger connection. Just switch on or off for use in the upor down positions. Note that in any of the manual modes, music can be still be played through the Ci 200QT speaker when it is in the up position, acting as a flush-mount ceiling speaker.
KEF Ci 200QT Set Up Instructions - Manual Set Up
Installation diagram - manual set up>>
These instructions describe an application for a 5 speaker Home Theatre system, though are relevant for 2, 3 and 4 speaker systems as well.
- Locate the jumper on the top left hand corner of the PCB situated on the rear of each KEF Ci 200QT. This is a two-position jumper, marked Auto and Man (Manual). All speakers in a manual set up need this jumper to be set to Man. (See diagram above)
- A constant 12V DC power supply is required to power the motor that lowers and raises the speakers. Also needed is a switched 12V DC power supply which acts as a trigger when the speakers are required to move into the down position. This trigger can be provided in many ways - in its simplest form it could be a manual switch - but more commonly comes from the switched AC outlet on the rear panel of a Home Theatre receiver. (This is the scenario we will use for this example.)
- A 12V DC power supply (rated at 500mA minimum) should be connected to the switched AC outlet on the rear panel of the Home Theatre receiver. The second 12V DC power supply connects to a constant power source. (mains power point) This supply should be rated at least 350mA PER Ci 200QT that is used. i.e. when using five speakers, supply should be rated at least 1.75 A. N.B. There is no need to use two separate power supplies as shown in the diagram below. The same unit can be used to supply power to both motor and trigger providing the unit has sufficient amperage capability.
- The Black 0V cable from each speaker connects to the negative from the constant power supply.
- The Red 12V cable from each speaker connects to the positive from the constant power supply.
- Choose one speaker in the system to be the master. (The other speakers in the system will slave from the master.) The White master cable connects from the master speaker to the Green control cables of each of the other slave speakers.
- The Grey common cables from all speakers are connected to each other.
- The Green control cable from the speaker which has been chosen to be the master, connects to the positive from the switched power supply connected to the AC outlet on the rear panel of the Home Theatre receiver.
- The negative from the switched power supply connected to the AC outlet on the rear panel of the Home Theatre receiver is connected to the Grey common cables of all speakers in the system.
- The speaker connections are made to the appropriate speakers - e.g. centre speaker output from the Home Theatre receiver connects to centre speaker. These connections are not shown on the wiring diagram, as they should be self-evident and would make the diagram somewhat harder to follow.
- The White master cables from each of the slave speakers should remain unused. The master speaker should have all cables connected.
In this system, when the Home Theatre receiver is powered up the KEF Ci 200QT loudspeakers will motor into the down position. When the receiver is switched off the loudspeakers will motor back into the flush position.
Auto music Sensing Set Up
Installation diagram - auto music sensing set up>>
These instructions describe an application for a 5 speaker Home Theatre system, though are relevant for 2, 3 and 4 speaker systems as well.
- Locate the jumper on the top left hand corner of the PCB situated on the rear of each KEF Ci 200QT. This is a two-position jumper, marked Auto and Man (Manual). One speaker should be set to Auto (this is the Master speaker), and all others in the system should be set to Man (these are the Slave speakers.) It is recommended to use either the front left or front right speaker as the master, so that the system will still trigger if only a two channel stereo signal is being received. If either of the rear speakers or the centre speaker is selected as the master, then a trigger either will not, or may not be available to motor the speakers into the down position, when playing a two channel stereo recording or a five channel recording with little surround information.
- A 12 Volt power supply rated at a minimum of 350mA per Ci 200QT used is required. The Red 12V DC cable of each speaker should be connected to the 12V + from the power supply. The Black 0V cable of each speaker should be connected to the 12V - from the power supply.
- The White master cable of the Master speaker (set to Auto) should be connected to the Green control cable of each slave speaker (set to Man.)
- The Grey common cable of all the speakers should be connected to each other forming a loop.
- The speaker connections are made to the appropriate speakers - e.g. centre speaker output from the Home Theatre receiver connects to centre speaker. These connections are not shown on the wiring diagram as they should be self-evident and would make the diagram somewhat harder to follow.
- This should leave the following cables unused:
For the Master speaker - the Green control cable.
For the Slave speakers - the White master cables.
When the power supply is initially turned on, the speakers will all power down. They will power back up after 5 minutes approx. if no signal is received from the amplifier. In subsequent use they will power down when signal is present, and power back into the up position approx. 5 minutes after they stop receiving signal from the amplifier.
General notes
In Auto mode, no sound will come from the speakers whilst in the up position. If the install demands that the speakers must function whilst flush (in the up position), then the system should be installed in the manual mode, with the positions of the two blue fly leads on the main PCB interchanged.
It is imperative that the polarity of the power cables for the Ci 200QT is correct. Do not reverse the polarity of the power cables on order to return the speakers to the up position as this will cause damage to the circuitry which can not be easily rectified in the field.
The use of "wall wort" type transformers is not recommended for the main power to the Ci 200QT.
In this system the speakers are Auto sensing. When they receive signal they power down. After approx. 5 minutes without signal they power back into the up position.
