Pure Ellipse Dome Profile

The starting point for the design was an existing high-performance titanium dome tweeter (left). The motion (shown at 20kHz) is highly exaggerated, but we can see that there are some resonance problems around the 'shoulder' of the dome which also cause lateral (radial) motion of the former. After using FEA to 'build' 20 virtual prototypes in just 8 working days we arrived at the new Reference design (right), with a one-piece titanium dome and former removing an assembly operation and providing improved mechanical integrity. The pure ellipse profile of the dome provides a continuously varying stiffness, removing any discontinuity which would give rise to the resonance feature shown on the left.
